No fewer than thirteen individuals killed and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key government projects.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The president announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was requested pending a full technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
