RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels providing entry to the facility... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey added. "Including them were thousands of British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the US military executed what it called a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
